Video files are wasteful when you only want the sound. A one-hour interview weighs roughly 500 MB as 720p video and around 55 MB as a 128 kbps MP3 — a ninety percent saving for content where the picture adds nothing. Which bitrate should you pick?

Bitrate is how much data the encoder spends per second of audio. More data means more detail retained, and a larger file.

For spoken word, 64–96 kbps is genuinely enough. The human voice occupies a narrow frequency band, and spending 320 kbps on a podcast is storage thrown away for no audible gain.

For music, the honest answer is that most people can't reliably distinguish 192 kbps from 320 kbps in a blind test on consumer headphones. The difference shows up on good equipment, in dense mixes, and in cymbals and reverb tails. If you have the storage, take 320 and stop thinking about it. If you're filling a phone, 192 is a sensible ceiling.

What actually limits the audio quality

This part matters more than the bitrate you select, and almost no converter site explains it.

YouTube does not store MP3. It stores audio as Opus in WebM containers, or AAC in M4A containers, at bitrates that typically run from 48 kbps up to around 160 kbps depending on the video. Those are modern codecs — Opus at 128 kbps sounds noticeably better than MP3 at 128 kbps.

When you convert to MP3, the audio is decoded from Opus or AAC and re-encoded. That's a lossy-to-lossy transcode, and it introduces a second round of compression artefacts on top of the ones already there. It's called generation loss.

Two consequences follow from this:

Selecting 320 kbps does not create quality that wasn't in the source. If YouTube served a 128 kbps AAC stream, encoding it at 320 kbps gives you a bigger file containing the same information plus transcoding artefacts. It doesn't hurt, but it doesn't help either. 192 kbps is a reasonable sweet spot for most YouTube sources.

The upload matters more than anything you choose here. A song uploaded from a lossless master will always sound better than the same song uploaded from someone's 96 kbps rip, no matter what settings you use. A converter can't recover detail the uploader never provided.

If your player handles M4A or Opus — and most modern phones, browsers, and music apps do — taking the original audio without transcoding is technically the better file. MP3 wins on universal compatibility, particularly with car stereos, older devices, and DJ software, which is why it remains the default request.

Getting the files into your music library

iPhone. Safari saves downloads to the Files app under Downloads, not to Apple Music. To get MP3s into your library you'll need to sync them through Finder on a Mac, or use a third-party player like VLC or Documents that plays from the Files app directly. Most people find the second route easier.

Android. Files land in /Download. Poweramp, Musicolet, VLC, and most gallery-style music apps scan that folder automatically. If a track doesn't appear, opening it once from the Files app usually triggers a rescan.

Windows and Mac. Downloads go to your Downloads folder and play in anything. To add to Apple Music, drag the file onto the app window. For Windows, Media Player and Winamp-style players read MP3 natively.

Tags and filenames. Extracted files inherit the video title, which means you'll get things like Artist - Song (Official Video) [HD].mp3 rather than clean metadata. When conversion fails

Private, members-only, or otherwise restricted videos can't be retrieved. There's no workaround.

Live streams have no completed file until the broadcast ends and YouTube publishes the archive.

Rate limiting kicks in if you fire off several conversions in quick succession. Wait 20–30 seconds and try again; a different extraction layer often succeeds on the retry.

Region-restricted videos fail when the extraction server sits in a blocked territory, independent of where you are.

Very long files — three-hour mixes, full concert recordings — take proportionally longer to process and are more likely to time out on a weak connection. Dropping to a lower bitrate reduces the file size and improves the odds of completing.

Total failure across all six layers on several different videos usually means YouTube has shipped a change affecting multiple extraction methods at once. It resolves, typically within hours.

Using third-party tools to download from YouTube breaches YouTube's Terms of Service. The sanctioned offline options are YouTube Premium and the app's built-in download feature.

Separately from those terms, copying commercial music without permission is copyright infringement in essentially every jurisdiction. This is the single highest-risk category of audio extraction — the recording industry has pursued stream-ripping sites specifically and repeatedly, and "personal use only" is not a legal defence in most countries, whatever you may have read.

Audio you can extract without that problem:

  • Creative Commons licensed audio — check the video description for a CC-BY notice; attribution is normally required
  • Public domain recordings — pre-copyright works, government material, explicitly dedicated content
  • Content you have permission for — lectures your institution shared, interviews you conducted, material licensed to you
  • Royalty-free libraries published on YouTube by their creators for reuse

Criticism, commentary, news reporting, teaching, and research may fall under fair use or fair dealing, but these are fact-specific tests that differ by country, not blanket permissions. Anything commercial or public-facing deserves proper advice rather than an assumption.
